The Sky Sox changed affiliates from the Rockies to the Brewers in the offseason. While many fans in the Colorado Springs don't like the idea of losing the connection, I'm happier than Bernie on his slide.
And then the opening weekend hits. After a win Thursday, the Sox proceeded to give up a combined 33 runs in the remaining three games, dropping all of them. The only positive of the Sunday 16-11 disaster? Watching the scoreboard as the Albuquerque Isotopes (Rockies new affiliate) lose 16-10 as well.
Okay, Nashville is the A's affiliate and they've dominated the PCL for years. Let's see how the next series goes as they open against Round Rock tonight.

A Strange Game
The game last night was a strange one. While I could type a wall of text about it, let's just focus on the bottom of the 9th. Tommy Field led off. On a 1-2 pitch, it appeared he had fouled of a pitch. However, there were two sounds. Upon taking my eyes back to the plate, the umpire was pointing at the Z's catcher and then sending Tommy to 1st. It was catcher's interference, not a common call.
Next up, Wil Nieves squared to bunt. The pitch was up and in and sent Nieves sprawling back while the ball, which had struck the bat, was rolling down the first base line. It was a successful bunt, moving Field to second. Not exactly pretty, but the job was done.
Then, it really got weird. Rob Scahill, normally a starting pitchers, was the pinch hitter. Why did the Sox bunt if they only had pitchers left on the bench? In any case, he was announced by the plate umpire. However, New Orleans was very confused. They even hollered back, "We don't have him." However, the umpire let him hit. On a 2-1 pitch, Scahill lined a single up the middle. Field rounded 3rd but was held (wisely) by Stu Cole. The problem was the Z's centerfielder didn't see that Field was being held and launched a throw to the plate. It went over the head of everyone to the screen. Normally, this wouldn't be a big issue, but the Z's pitcher wasn't backing up the play. Field scores. Sox win.
Summary: Field reaches on interference; Nieves sac bunt; Scahill (pinch-hitter) singles, advancing Field to 3rd; Field scores on error.
Strange end to a strange night. Good teams win these kind of games and right now, the Sox are winning them.

Sky Sox Playing Well
I really need to post more here. The Sox have for the most part weathered the storm of the early season schedule, coming home at 20-19 with only 11 home games played. The optimist says this is a very good sign. The pessimist says the Rockies have called up all of the starting pitching because of the struggles in Denver. Either way, I'm looking forward to watching some baseball this weekend.

Sky Sox can't pull off their first series sweep of season | season, series, sky - Colorado Springs Gazette, CO: "The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (20-19) could not finish off their first series sweep of the season as their bats were blanked 6-0 by the Memphis Redbirds (14-25), but the Sky Sox were able to stay in sole possession of first place in the Pacific Northern Division."Just a curiosity question, how did the Sox get New Orleans to agree to an 11am start Thursday? Usually teams travel early in the morning and the Z's are coming in from a homestand in New Orleans. I know there's an off-day Wednesday, but I would have thought they still would have wanted to stay home the extra day and fly out Thursday...

Sox Lose Opener
Don't think I'm going to post about all 144 games, but I did see much of last night's loss in Reno. The third inning was the Sox downfall. Between Stu brining the infield in with a runner at third up 1-0, a botched rundown and a groudball Wood couldn't pick up and a few line drives, it didn't go well. It's tough to overcome big innings on the road and the Sox couldn't last night, losing 5-2. The great thing about baseball though, is, you get to play the next day. The Sox send Mosoco to the mound tonight against the Aces.
One other note about last nights game: I didn't see any Sox from 2011 in the box score. Maybe I'm missing one, but it looks like a complete roster overhaul.

Openers and Predictions
Well, it's finally here. After a winter wondering about humidors and whether Colorado Springs would keep a team, it's now opening day. We have a humidor and a two-year extension with the Rockies. Sounds great. Of course, the Gazette seems to thing we are going to have a great season on the field too: Offseason additions make Sky Sox a contender for PCL crown - Colorado Springs Gazette, CO.
Personally, I don't know how anyone who knows the relationship with the Rockies and history can say the Sky Sox are going to contend for the crown. I mean the last time they made the playoffs (let alone won in the playoffs) was 1996 when they were swept by the Phoenix Firebirds. That's right, the Diamondbacks hadn't even played a game yet. Shoot, the Sky Sox have the longest streak of not making the playoffs in Minor League baseball, but yet the local paper has us "contending".
Now, I don't mean to be a downer on the Sox opening day, but let's be serious. The Rockies have made it very clear Colorado Springs isn't their favorite affiliate. Tulsa will get the prospects, especially the pitching prospects until they are ready for Denver. With the Rockies rotation including Jaime Moyer and a group of young, inexperienced starters, I'm seeing a lot of pitching movement during the season. (Let's see if we can avoid future stories like this.) Inconsistency in the rotation in Denver means emergency starters in Colorado Springs and Tulsa. Emergency starters in Colorado Springs usually means Sky Sox losses.
Moreover, the schedule, while wonderful for fans of summer baseball, is going to be tough on the Sky Sox starting out. Twenty of the first 28 are on the road and 28 of the first 40 games the humidor won't be in play. If after those first 40 games the Sky Sox are still above .500, I'll start thinking about September baseball. Until then, I'm hopeful, but not optimistic.
Tonight, the Sox send Christian Friedrich to the mound against Reno. The game is televised on MiLB.tv and is on http://www.sportsanimal1300.com/

The Humidor Is In!
Now we just need some pitching...

Colorado Springs gets its own humidor | ColoradoRockies.com: News: ""It's installed and currently operational," Rockies player development director Jeff Bridich said. "I'm sure all of the home pitchers and all of the road pitchers -- every pitcher in the park will be thankful.""

Joseph Torres Suspended
Here we go again. After last season saw the loss of Mike Jacobs for steroids, it looks like another Sky Sox player will be out for 50 games. This time it's Joseph Torres for amphetamines.
